Analysis of the Skyfall film poster.
The main image in the promotional poster is an iconic image
of Daniel Craig, standing very powerfully, with a smouldering look in his eyes.
In addition he is holding a gun, which the viewer can relate to his violent job
that he is notoriously known for.
Apart from the main iconic image of Daniel Craig there is
the also iconic black and white swirl in the background, it also has a twist to
it. It has British scenery in the background, with the union jack flag in the
city scene. This gives the viewer an establishment of the set, which the film
will be set in. the main black and white colours are very stereotypical for a James
Bond film. This is because they are very simple colours and also very smart and
sophisticated. And this is mainly why there is little colour throughout the
poster and the main colour being expressed through the colour in the union jack
flag, in the background; Setting the scene for the film. In addition it joins
in with his classic black and white tuxedo.
For this promotional poster, it targets the diehard Bond
fans, but also this poster mainly appeals to men, aged 16-24. But also this
appeals to women because of the sex appeal due to his posture and smouldering eyes.
The poster does set the narrative to a certain extent due to
the British scenery and the fact that he is still holding his iconic weapon. So
we can understand that he is based in London and that it will still have an
active narrative, as it is in the former Bond films.
As I have already mentioned Daniel Craig’s posture and that
it is very powerful, I think that this shows what type of character he plays; A
very bold, ruthless man. Also due to him holding the gun in a very powerful, as
if he is trying to make a statement, it shows that the film is an action. But however,
the iconic genre of James Bond is an action but this is much darker than the
rest and this is shown throughout the poster, with the bottom of the iconic
tuxedo mixing with the iconic black swirl. This also shows that this film will
be abit darker and have more mystery in it compared to the former films.
Black and red are genially known as very statement colours
and give a very powerful impression. This applies to the Skyfall poster because
there is mainly black with a hint of red in the background, which proved quite
eye catching. This would have been put there to represent passion, they are
very important because they are iconic James Bond colours.
The relationship between the typical British setting and the
viewer is that it is a stereotypical British film so the viewer can relate the
scenery to be London. Furthermore they can relate to the stereotypical exotic
location in which action films normally have.
There is an iconic tagline of “007” underneath the main
title, “Skyfall”. This is very iconic to the James Bond films, this is due to
him being the “007” agent. The poster states all of the information at the
bottom of the poster in white writing so it stands out against the black
background. It does state the official ‘Skyfall’ webpage at the bottom of the
poster. This is so that people can then go to the website for further
information. This causes a ‘Skyfall’ hype throughout the public bumping the public’s
interest in the film, making more people watch the film and then evidentially making
more money.
